Rap And Its Evolution

Music evolves decade after decade. It will always be reinvented. With every new generation comes new beats and even wittier, more intelligent lyrics. Currently, we have a rapper who has decided to create his own wave. Not following the rest, but making music with true creativity while along sending a message.  I mean rappers normally tell life stories based on themselves. And yes there is usually some sort of message that somehow relates to their life and yours. Rap comes in many forms, from gangster rappers like Dr. Dre to club hits like Pitbull. But currently I’ve discovered a rapper who not only raps about his experiences but also defends a massive amount of people who are not particularly liked in the rap-hip hop world.  Since my child years, I remember rap commonly used  the word bitches and faggots in their rhymes. . My older brother would play 2 Short and I’d be livid feeling so disrespected. I guess I’ve always been a feminist ha ha. My mom took care of that for me 🙂 I no longer had to hear that type of music in the house. Me at 31 now, I can see that the world is changing. I can’t explain how living in a real life movement feels. Kinda surreal. Rap and its evolution, we’re in a historic moment people. Whether you care or agree…it has changed.

What does it take for change?

It’s a single person, a group of very few or even thousands…their bravely brings on change.

It’s a single person, a group of very few or even thousands…their bravely brings on change. A pathway for so many others to be free. From civil wars to the fight for human rights. Do you know how those then, gave us what we have today? I’m thankful. Imagine if my day-to-day activity was cooking and doing laundry… not by choice, but that’s what was expected :0/ What if I wasn’t allowed to make my own money? The fact that women back before my time had no rights outside of the home is mind-blowing. I couldn’t imagine life that way. But things have changed in part to those who stood outside of the supreme court holding signs, chanting equal rights. And the lives that have been lost fighting for a cause. Thanks to them, for standing up against those in power risking everything to do what’s right. They are so greatly admired by many. Their legacies should be remembered forever, share them with your kids and so on. Greatness should always be shared. Giving Back is a great way to live, no matter how big or small. In whatever shape or form.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. ~Martin Luther King, JR.~

Who will you stand up for?

Change is viral now thanks to the internet. Have you ever heard of Change.org? Facebook, Twitter? Of course you have. We ordinary people have access to a wide range of people at the tip of our fingers. We share stories, we ask for support, and we post what we believe in. We’re able to make someone second guess themselves and even change the way they’re living. I’ll give you a couple of examples. I am a huge advocate for END IT and SMF. Both are organizations bound together by love and compassion to end human sex/slavery trafficking. Through social media alone I’ve been able to spread the word. People who I’ve never seen post anything about it all the sudden started becoming voices. I stopped eating meat over a month ago, that’s a whole other  blog post I’ll have to share. But I’ve started following organizations like Mercy For Animals and many more. I started posting facts and pictures. I even post food that I buy, post what I make, and I also post often about my struggles with trying to stay strong. People listen.  People who were not aware of all the abuse are aware now. I even have someone who decided to go Pescetarian just a week ago. All this with the power of the internet. So people can’t really say they don’t have time to fight for a good cause because they post and like on Facebook constantly. Why not use your voice for some good?

So my point is, you have the power, what will you do with it? Macklemore decided to risk his entire career to stand up for others.

Rap and its evolution….thanks to Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert for paving the way for the next generation. This song is a fine example of how a few people can make a difference. They were just recently featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show. She seemed so proud to have them on her stage. And I was so proud of Ellen for putting them on her stage. They are both making a positive impact in the world, for the people…it’s a beautiful thing. He’ll get some haters for it but he obviously doesn’t care. He rather be brave than a coward, standing up for what’s right. We need more people like him.

Be the change you want to see. ~Mahatma Gandhi~

Macklemore ~ Ryan Lewis Featuring Mary Lambert.

[Verse 1: Macklemore]
When I was in the 3rd grade
I thought that I was gay
Cause I could draw, my uncle was
And I kept my room straight
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She’s like, “Ben you’ve loved girls since before pre-K”
Trippin’, yeah, I guess she had a point, didn’t she
A bunch of stereotypes all in my head
I remember doing the math like
“Yeah, I’m good a little league”
A pre-conceived idea of what it all meant
For those who like the same sex had the characteristics
The right-wing conservatives think its a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made, rewiring of a pre-disposition
Playing God
Ahh nah, here we go
America the brave
Still fears, what, we don’t know
And God loves all His children
Is somehow forgotten
But we paraphrase a book written
35 hundred years ago
I don’t know

[Hook: Mary Lambert]
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]

[Verse 2: Macklemore]
If I was gay
I would think hip-hop hates me
Have you read the YouTube comments lately
“Man that’s gay”
Gets dropped on the daily
We’ve become so numb to what we’re sayin’
Our culture founded from oppression
Yeah, we don’t have acceptance for ‘em
Call each other faggots
Behind the keys of a message board
A word routed in hate
Yet our genre still ignores it
Gay is synonymous with the lesser
It’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion
Gender and skin color
Complexion of your pigment
The same fight that lead people to walk-outs and sit-ins
It’s human rights for everybody
There is no difference
Live on! And be yourself!
When I was in church
They taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service
Those words aren’t anointed
And that Holy Water
That you soak in
Is then poisoned
When everyone else
Is more comfortable
Remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans
That have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same
But that’s not important
No freedom ’til we’re equal
Damn right I support it
I don’t know

[Hook: Mary Lambert]
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]

[Verse 3: Macklemore]
We press play
Don’t press pause
Progress, march on!
With a veil over our eyes
We turn our back on the cause
‘Till the day
That my uncles can be united by law
Kids are walkin’ around the hallway
Plagued by pain in their heart
A world so hateful
Someone would rather die
Than be who they are
And a certificate on paper
Isn’t gonna solve it all
But it’s a damn good place to start
No law’s gonna change us
We have to change us
Whatever god you believe in
We come from the same one
Strip away the fear
Underneath it’s all the same love
About time that we raised up

[Hook: Mary Lambert]
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm [x4]

[Outro: Mary Lambert]
Love is patient, love is kind
Love is patient (not cryin’ on Sundays)
Love is kind (not crying on Sundays) [x5]

About me…let’s see….I would say I am a TRUE Virgo. If you knew me, then you would so agree. There are quite a few things I care deeply about. Off the top of my head, I would say with much passion, my family, friends, the environment and world peace. Oh and animals. Can't forget them. I think I love animals more than most humans, lol. I believe it’s important to surround yourself with good people. Be picky with who you let in your circle. The environment, the earth does not belong to us. We are merely just visiting for a period of time. So lets no abuse it. World peace, that’s a hard one. It’s not a perfect world, but wouldn't it be wonderful if every child, women and man were safe? We can’t change the world and every single soul living on earth. But one person can make a great difference in the surroundings in which they live. Wouldn't you agree? Let’s not forget what fuels my soul, music. It speaks for me when I can’t. It expresses my feelings when I am unaware of what they are. It has a way of lifting my spirits when I am down. It has this magical power that is able to touch my heart with just lyrics alone. I wouldn't know what I would do without it. Poetry, I love poetry. In all forms...written or spoken.

Any thoughts?
